Real World: i-Pharm Edition - With Minette Tshibangu

What initially attracted you to recruitment and why did you choose to work at i-Pharm?

I`ve always liked working with people in a diverse market. So, after college I aimed for an opportunity to use my communication skills and work in an international environment. What initially attracted me to recruitment was being able to sit on that “other side”. I was very curious to interview and consult individuals and to find out their needs. Therefore, I figured, the opportunity within recruitment to work with both candidates and clients, aligned 100% with my areas of interest.

When I applied for a job at i-Pharm, I knew this would be the right company for me. This was not only due to the diverse team in the Munich office, which allowed me to really identify with the environment. But also because of the connection i-Pharmers share throughout the different offices globally. The transparency and open communication gave me the immediate feeling of a true team-oriented atmosphere. Afterall, I feel like being a part of a big family, where I can also do what I love, which is to connect talent with the right opportunities.

When did you start working at i-Pharm?

I started working at i-Pharm around 3 and a half years ago.

How did you achieve your most recent promotion? What is your advice to consultants that are looking to take the next step in their careers?

I was recently promoted to Team Lead. This may sound cliché, but my way of achieving this goal was genuinely through hard work! It wasn’t the title that changed - it was more my attitude that did and with that came the title.

I had to learn how to set priorities. Especially when I started to get involved with my team members’ processes while still focusing on my own market as a 360 consultant. I mentored a younger professional, which also helped me to further evaluate my own skills and capabilities. In certain cases that meant going the extra mile - for example, stayed longer at the office than I usually do. In other cases, it meant for me to act as a role model for my peers to motivate them. Eventually, all that didn’t go unnoticed and shortly after, I became a Team Lead. So, what I would advise to anyone looking to take on the next step in their career is to keep yourself motivated so you can motivate others. Keep working hard so you can set the pace for the ones to come after you.

How has your manager helped you achieve this promotion?

My manager has played a big role in all my promotions. I could always have an open conversation with him about my goals and together, we strove to achieve these goals. He helped me to prepare for this journey and defined a clear path for me which outlines goals for me to achieve to become a team lead.

I started to have more and more leading responsibilities and I really valued that he allowed me to be a decision maker for our internal business decisions. At the end of the day, my manager promoted me to Team Lead after one year of being Senior Recruitment Consultant. Overall, I’m very thankful that he supported me in this path by giving me further responsibilities where I could prove to myself what I’m capable of.

What training has i-Pharm offered you to support your personal growth to date?

Our internal Training & Development department has given me a big boost in my personal growth. Our Head of People, Leah Naffah, provides regular training sessions in both Group settings and One-on-One’s. During these sessions I have the chance to grow where I was currently standing as far as my skills. But most importantly I was able to understand the areas where I needed to further develop myself. I love being able to visit our London headquarters for leadership training with the rest of the team where we cover crucial topics that not only help me professionally, but also personally.

Our training has helped me to become more confident in my way of working, which has also become representative/seen in my surroundings.  What I really appreciate about all the training sessions I have had so far is that they help me become the best version of myself.

Recruitment has its challenges – how do you stay motivated?

Recruitment can be challenging at times. During these times, I keep reminding myself that I know what success looks like within recruitment. This pushes me to keep working hard and I to stay focused. Another thing that motivates me are my colleagues – I start thinking about the outcome my attitude has towards them. Since it can be contagious, I try to stay positive and strive for the best possible outcome in everything that I do.

What advice would you give a graduate considering a career in recruitment?

My advice for graduates considering a career in recruitment would be to be yourself. In recruitment it’s easy to lose yourself and become a “robot”.

The key is to find your own style within recruitment and the earlier you do that, the easier it will be for you, especially at the beginning of your career. The relevant people will be more attracted to you. And it is OK to make mistakes, one could even say that it is important that you do! The best lessons I’ve learned are from past mistakes I’ve made. So, dare yourself and “if at first you don’t succeed, get yourself up and try again”, to quote Aaliyah 😊

Favourite thing about working at i-Pharm?

My favourite thing about working at i-Pharm is the same reason why I initially applied for i-Pharm – The Team! I love the fact that we can all work together throughout our offices on a global level – there is a great synergy across all the offices. At the end of the day we share the same goal, which is to make our business more successful. For me, the whole team - from Trainee Consultants to the Management team - all levels matter, and all voices are being heard. So, this is what motivates me the most to come to work.

Now, for the most important question of the article...what's your favorite German food...?

Knödel mit Schweinsbraten (Dumplings with pork roast)  😊
