Real World: i-Pharm Edition - With Marica MamicWhat is it like to be a real-life female powerhouse who was just promoted to Business Manager in our Munich office? We sat down with Marica this week to talk about her career progression where she discusses opening a new desk, her in-depth learning & development program and how Vietnamese food fuels her team.
When did you start working at i-Pharm?
In January 2015
What initially attracted you to recruitment?
During my studies I was working at an executive search Company as a researcher. It was not enough for me to do the search and then leave it with the consultants – I wanted to have it all. I specifically wanted to be hands-on in guiding the process to a successful placement. I really enjoy this, and I like being the person in control who ensures that the client and candidate are happy, not just at the point of acceptance of offer, but for the weeks and months that follow. My role allows me to make a positive impact on people's lives every day and I get to do it within the pharmaceutical industry, which also embodies this mindset.
How did you achieve your most recent promotion? What is your advice to consultants that are looking to take the next step in their careers?
I switched from a very busy and high performing desk to a new market. In doing so I took a risk, but I knew the challenge was the right thing for me and the right thing for the wider business.
I had to start again from the ground up and really challenge myself. It was not easy AT ALL and I encountered many setbacks, but my will was stronger, and I stuck with it. I had a clear vision of where I wanted to be, and I knew it was worth fighting for.
My advice would be: don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and to think seriously about what you want to achieve. Once you have this, always fight for it and don’t let yourself get down when you encounter setbacks. They will always make you stronger!
How has your manager helped you achieve this promotion?
Since my first day at i-Pharm I had a very open and transparent relationship with my Manager, and I am very thankful for that. He always knew what my specific goals were, my fears and doubts, and my career ambitions.
My manager entrusted me with this new project, and he encouraged me to pursue it, which of course gave me all the motivation that I needed to make it a success. We followed a specific strategy where we focused on small, but effective achievements which paved the way to greater successes.
What training has i-Pharm offered you to support your personal growth to date?
Where do I start - I can’t even count exactly how many training sessions I have received in the past 5 years! But if I had to guess, I would say around 25-30. I had one-on-one training, management training, personal development training, recruitment training for Trainees, Consultants and Senior Consultants, sales training, Team Leader training and much more!
All these different levels of training are interactive: they MOTIVATE and reflect your personality and situation! They also encourage you to think about how you want to be seen as a person, colleague, employee, Manager and Recruiter.
Recruitment has its challenges; how do you stay motivated?
Easy: I love this job. I’ve had some moments for sure where I was frustrated about the process, but it didn’t change my motivation - the goal was always the same. I don’t allow myself to fall into the trap of feeling sorry for myself or to think that everything is against me. Instead I try to learn from every “bad” experience and turn it into a positive lesson for the future.
Speaking with my colleagues really helps as well 😊 It’s nice to know that you aren’t the only one who gets frustrated and speaking with them helps me relax and talk through the process. Often, they have been through a similar challenge and can lend some very helpful advice about what they did when they were in that particular situation.
What’s your favourite thing about working at i-Pharm?
It’s not easy to say only one thing! But if I have to name just one, I think my favourite would be the TRUST. I have a child at home, who also wants my full attention. I am sure that a lot of women unfortunately still need to choose between child or career. My managers took this pressure away from me and said, “You will do both and we will support you to do it”. I am more than grateful for having this opportunity and the flexibility they give me genuinely does allow me to achieve both things without having to sacrifice one or the other.
Most importantly, what’s your favourite food…?
At the moment, crunchy duck in satay or red thai curry sauce. We order it from our local Vietnamese every single week in the office. We’re still waiting to get sick of it so we can try something new – hasn’t happened yet 😊
Thanks for chatting with us, Mamic. Also - who doesn't love Vietnamese food?! We are right there with you.
