Start spreading the news, David was leaving today (this time 2 months ago) because he wanted to be a part of it - New York, New Yooooorrrrrrrk! Wow, sorry about that...who can talk about moving to New York City without quoting Frank Sinatra?! Are we right?! Anyways, where were we... well, David Fearnley moved out to the USA to work in our NYC office in August and we can't believe he has been there for almost 2 months! We decided to sit down with him and see what it was like moving from our London office to our New York office and how he has found living there so far.
Happy almost 2 month anniversary in our New York office, David! How does it feel?
Pretty spectacular. I still wake up every morning and can't believe that I'm here!
What’s a typical day in our New York office like?
- Turn up to work and receive some terrible banter for how well dressed I am!
- Get on with a solid morning of candidate sourcing
- Go get food. I’m still yet to have the same thing twice for lunch as there is an astronomical amount of options, we have within walking distance. I’m notoriously famous for eating the exact same lunch day-in day-out.
- Hit the BD all afternoon trying to remain standing. I like thinking on my feet.
- There is a good social side to work so we tend to frequent the local bars towards the end of the week for a cheeky beer.
So can you explain your role in the USA a bit? What are you doing for us out in New York? Also, how did you end up working in our New York office?
In a nutshell – my role is to work at Principal level for i-Pharm’s US Statistical Programming function. I’m working a full lifecycle recruitment position with a heavy focus on the business development side of the role. I’m looking to build a portfolio of clients who are coming back to us consistently for repeat business within our functional specialisms.
The idea of living in the USA has always been a dream of mine. As soon as it was announced we were looking to open a US office I put my name in the hat straight away. The reality of getting myself to be truly considered was down to meeting my yearly target and creating a proven track record in business development operations. I also had the opportunity to build my own desk from scratch which at first was challenging, but as Drake said, “started from the bottom, now we here”.
What’s your favourite thing about working at i-Pharm in New York?
Definitely the autonomy, everyone is a skilled recruiter here. As a result, we have a grown-up environment where you're trusted and respected to get the job done. The dynamics and structure in the office because of this makes it a solid high achieving environment – and long may it continue! If you are looking to start a career in life sciences recruitment, i-Pharm can give you the tools to succeed and build a profitable desk.
We currently have a few positions open in our New York office. What advice would you give to someone applying for a role?
This is a very exciting time for the company. If you are the type of person who is an entrepreneur at heart, this is a good time to join, as you will be on the ground floor of something that is going to be big. Everyone is working hard and keen to succeed - so I would recommend anyone applying knows that an attitude of giving it your best and working hard is needed. We are in many ways still in start-up mode and everyone is going above and beyond.
What’s the biggest thing you have learned at i-Pharm?
I believe 99.9% of all my colleagues will agree that my catch-phrase is “persistence beats resistance”. As cliché as that is, it's something I swear by as it’s something I have picked up as a mentality through my time at i-Pharm so far. I was able to assume this frame of mind by always having someone to support me and provide feedback throughout my time with the company.
Okay, now to what’s important, what’s your favourite spot in New York and what’s your favourite thing to do?!
My favourite thing to do Is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) and I recently joined the very prestigious Marcelo Garcia Academy in NYC. As I have been injured for a bit since I have been here, I have indulged in some solid nights out too. I’ve been to this rooftop bar called Mr. Purple a few times which I really like – I won’t lie, the view never seems to get old!
It's so great to hear how much you are loving the New York office! We do miss you over here in London, David, but we couldn't be happier for you and what you have achieved in New York so far!
