From Trainee to Director - a Q&A with Nasser Qayumi, Director UK-EUWith the company growing at an exponential rate, we’re talking to some of our current employees to find out what working at i-Pharm is like behind the scenes, top tips on becoming a successful recruiter and why you should join our journey. How long have you worked at i-Pharm Consulting and what are the main responsibilities of your role?
My name is Nasser Qayumi and I’m the Divisional Sales Director of our UK-EU Business. I’m responsible for the strategic direction and leadership of our Contract and Permanent Recruitment teams across the UK and European markets with i-Pharm. I started my recruitment career with i-Pharm as a trainee in 2014 and have worked my way up in the last 8 years to Director.
How did you get to where you are now?
I started off as a Trainee with no recruitment experience and came in to support the Benelux region. My journey started off with really getting to know the recruitment industry itself and learning more about i-Pharm. When I started, i-Pharm had plans to grow, so at the time, there was only the London HQ office which was quickly followed by opening offices in Germany, Australia and the US. I saw this as a progression opportunity and the potential to maximise revenue and progress internally. Individuals like Aoife Cronin and Andy Yaxley demonstrated that i-Pharm’s infrastructure and culture nurtured organic growth. I have always been excited to grow as an individual and professionally and have learnt that it all comes down to hard work – no shortcuts. Having a plan, setting expectations for myself, consistency and a thorough leadership, have been critical enabling factors to having made it to where I am today.
Can you tell us a bit about the UK/EU Team?
The UK team is an extremely diverse team consisting of mix of exciting new talents, more experienced consultants and a homegrown leadership cohort. The culture we have grown and want to maintain is grounded in organic i-Pharm values. Despite our growth over the years, we have heavily invested in sustaining our values, starting from our recruitment processes right into the way we work and deliver to our clients. Our UK/EU team have just started their growth journey and I am excited to see our future achievements.
What do you enjoy most about working at i-Pharm?
A high degree of autonomy, a progressive culture, professional development, and a structured pathway are aspects I appreciate highly at i-Pharm – an environment fostering growth and success. Now, as a Divisional Director, I enjoy working with future leaders, helping people identify their strengths and opportunities to grow while not forgetting to celebrate and reward success. Being at the heart of an ever-evolving sector, life sciences, and experiencing our mission of changing lives first hand, is an ever-rewarding factor that remains at the centre of my motivation.

What have been your proudest achievements, individually and as a team?
Individually, witnessing the impact of my organic growth within the company is something I am proud of – I see this as a planted seed, from which many beautiful success stories have grown.
My proudest achievement as a team is our growth journey. All members of our team have experienced their unique growth journeys, in which they utilised challenges as building blocks to their flourishment both as individuals and professionals. I am proud of the collaboration they have all demonstrated both in stable and rocky times. I look forward to witnessing where this journey takes them and how many more lives we can change in return.
What’s something about you (a fun fact) that not many people know?
I speak five languages, including Dutch, English, Persian, Pashto and Hindi.
What would you do (for a career) if you weren’t in recruitment?
I thoroughly enjoy problem solving, people management, and a high-paced environment which is why sales has always been an attractive sector for me. However, sports has always been an integral part of my childhood and adolescence, so if not recruitment I would be a football coach or sports teacher.
If you could meet anyone, living or dead, who would you meet?
Muhammad Ali - his journey is beyond inspirational. He achieved the unachievable, continued aligning with his values, persevered with his self- belief and delivered results consistently. He chose a journey that would change millions of lives but didn’t forget to have fun along the way, in a time where all odds were against him. I resonate with his approach to change lives by investing into the journey itself and enjoying the results as a by-product.
What advice do you have for someone who wants to get into recruitment?
My advice for anyone joining recruitment, especially i-Pharm, is that recruitment has a bigger impact on lives than you think – it is a crucial enabler to saving lives. To fully enjoy the latter, give yourself time to learn, grow and stay consistent in your journey. i-Pharm has a phenomenal support system in place to materialise your ambitions and enable you to achieve your dreams while saving human lives. Try to have a good understanding of your market and at the same time, stay ambitious. There is so much you can achieve. I was given this advice when I joined i-Pharm and when I joined recruitment, and I don't think it clicked straight away – the growth you can experience within a company like i-Pharm and how much support you can get to get there. At the end of the day, there is no short cut to success, and it requires a lot of hard work, but the rewards are worth it! So, be proud of the difference you are making and enjoy the journey.
